I am possibly relocating to Richmond. I keep hearing that crime is getting worse in Richmond. Does anyone know the murder rate so far this year? I'm moving from Philadelphia were there have been over 100 murders so far this year. I just wanted to know how Richmond compared to Philadelphia crime.

Crime in Richmond is seriously overrated.

I live in the Fan and have never once been robbed or murdered.

The worse that has happened to me in my 9 years of living in the Fan is I had cup holders stolen from my car. Thats it !

There is crime on the outskirts. But you're pretty safe in the downtown area.

As well as in the dull suburbs.

Just don't live near a housing project... the majority of the city's murders occur in or very close to public housing.

Also, I'm assuming you're a mom, so schools are probably important as well. Above Elementary School, I wouldn't recommend city schools... The schools in Henrico and Chesterfield are much better across the board. Plus, there's always private school.

Do they have charter schools there? They're somewhat new here and didn't know how popular they are across the country.

There's been talk of starting charter schools in the city in the next few years, but I'm not aware of any that are open to date.

I have never been murdered either. I have been here all my life. Crime is down city wide and the winds of change are blowing in Richmond. We have very strong civic organizations throughout the city and we are all on the same page with regards to crime. Zero tolerance! Come on home.

Where are the projects located? What exits? Do the police not patrol those areas to help keep the crimes under control?

My husband and I visited Richmond in July, we accidentally took Exit 73 and ended up in an area that freaked me out. Could this be the area you are talking about?
