I haven't lived through a Richmond summer yet and friends keep assuring me that they're awful.

Yesterday and today didn't bother me at all. I come from a a very hot environment, but it's dry and so I've been told over and over, "oh the heat in Richmond is bad."

Does it get a lot worse then what Richmond saw today and yesterday?

Thanks!

Alley

Well if you are content with today you will be fine. It can get up in the 100s at very rare occasions but for the most part it is like this at max. I've been to FL before and I don't think Richmond's heat can ever compare.

Normally we get a "Bermuda High" in August which causes these 90+ days w 80% humidity. The last few times it hit this early July & August were pretty comfortable.

It gets a little bit worse. What makes it bad is the day after day grind of the heat and humidity. In August, even the nights are pretty hot and clammy. Trust me, you will be glad when fall arrives. Fall in Richmond is beautiful and a good time to drive up into the mountains. Before the invention of air conditioning, people would leave Richmond for "da Riva" in August. Air conditioning has made a huge difference.

Some folks say that the 115 in Phoenix and places like that is more bearable than Richmond 95 - I don't think so - I about died with the heat in AZ - but I have no problem here - maybe it's just what I am used to, but to answer your question, it gets worse - like the poster above said, it gets to be day, after day after week, after week of 93, 98, 97, 95, 99, 97, 94, 98, all with the high humidity, that begins to wear you out by August.

I think it's the duration that gets to people the most. Like you said it can stay that way for weeks. I guess I am bias as I am not outside everyday anymore. To be fair though it is only June 5th you have a long way to go.

Today is about as bad as it gets, though sometimes we can be in the low 100s. However, even mid-upper 90s are uncommon-- maybe only a few days out of the each summer month, unless we have a really nasty heatwave.

There is usually only a week or so of really nasty weather and it is usually the duration that is draining not the odd 90+ degree day. Alicia you sure have hit the extremes since you have been here. This has been an unusually warm spring and this winter was not the least bit typical.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies! I'm not as freaked out as I used to be. My friends have been telling me horror stories. It must just be human nature. . .

so good to know, Anders 15! I was actually in the area @ the time and didn't at all feel uncomfortable. Reminded me of my days in Sacramento CA when the summer temps climbed into the 90's, sometimes low 100's, although a tad less humid. But the Richmond sunshine & sky reminded me of CA. It was enjoyable. I am actually glad to be leaving New England.
