I'm not sure how you'll ever find a suitable place to retire if you are judging a location from a single internet post, but to each their own.

Yeah maybe once you have narrowed it down, I suggest maybe you don't read anything on City-Data about the place you've picked!

If you are crossing it off your list because of crime and the so-called war in the city then you have been fooled by someone who probably lives in some county or burbs that does not understand isolated crimes, Roanoke is very safe.

Qasim 95, an interesting post. Could you perhaps contact the Roanoke Times or the local tv networks? NO ONE in Roanoke
knows anything about these isues. I bet the Roanoke Police knows little also from my observation.

Maybe you need to look for a galaxy far, far away.

Roanoke crime is higher than average and growing worse each year. I live in a city where the overall crime rate is 19 so Roanoke's crime rate of 387 seems like a place I wouldn't want to live.

Your attached chart suggests that the crime rate has gone down each year since 2005.

This is not to minimize the presence of crime in the city and the area. It looks like only Portsmouth, Richmond and Norfolk (among the larger cities in VA) have a higher crime rate according to these charts.

And Cattknap, I suspect you could carve out a wealthy neighborhood of less than 5000 people in the Roanoke area that would show a similarly pretty sweet low crime rate to good old Prospect, Kentucky!

>>Prospect is a neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, in the United States. It forms part of the Louisville Metro government although it is separately incorporated as a 3rd-class city and lies partially within Oldham County. The population was 4,657 at the time of the year 2000 U.S. Census. It is one of the wealthiest communities in Kentucky.<<

Like Watchful said, its pretty hard to take your post seriously when you try to compare crime in a Louisville "neighborhood" vs. a city of roughly 100,000. Also, if you take a look at the chart you posted, you would see that the overall crime rate has actually decreased every year since 2005.
