Not an expert...but this one also seems to be popular - the opposite direction in the quirky town of Floyd!

Chateau Morrisette: Virginia Winery and Restaurant on the Blue Ridge Parkway

You should just come to Blacksburg Fork and Cork today and taste wines from 19 Virginia wineries. That's where we're headed.

Chateau Morrisette is popular for their festivals and brunch, but their wine is swill IMHO. Peaks of Otter is all fruit wines. For wineries in the Roanoke region I would suggest Virginia Mountain Vineyards and/or Fincastle Winery, Valhalla, and Amhrein's.

I second this. I'm partial to Valhalla myself.

I tried several local wines when in Roanoke, and the ONLY ones (depending on how far your definition extends for "local" -- there are many great Virginia wineries in and around Charlottesville, like Barboursville; I also really liked the wines I had from CrossKeys, a winery near Harrisonburg, especially their Cabernet Franc, a grape which does well in Virginia soil) that I sought out more than once were Chateau Morrisette's. I cannot stand their "Sweet Mountain Laurel" wines, and my negative impression of those wines scared me off of trying any of their other wines for quite some time. Then my boyfriend and I went to their restaurant when we were in the area and were BLOWN AWAY. By the food, AND the wine. We were lucky enough to make it back one more time before we moved away, for New Year's. Among their delicious wines were their Vidal Blanc (a white varietal that does well in Virginia terroir), Merlot (I don't drink Merlot often; this was a rarity in being a Merlot I'd seek out and purchase again), Heritage (a port style wine), and Star Dog (sparkling wine). They are located in a gorgeous setting off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Meadows of Dan and Floyd--makes for a great road trip.

I should add, my favorite winery in the region is Attimo. Where did you end up, OP?
