Hey all - we are originally from Rochester, living in Charleston, SC now. We are moving back for family and we would like to be in the city ( no kids ) in a nice area. Rochester is changing since I lived there 8 years ago and places that weren't great before are becoming popular - Southwedge, etc - so I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to pocket neighborhoods in the city. We are in our thirties, married, no kids - work for ourselves.
Wife wants someplace that she won't be scared to walk the dogs by herself during the day - hopefully at night.
Anyhow - there is a beautiful house for sale on Hazelwood Terrace EAST of Culver - in between Culver and Merchants - that has an open house on Sunday. The house is amazing - https://www.redfin.com/NY/Rochester/.../home/92816068

I know west of Culver is bad - how would that area be?
Do you think my wife would feel safe? I know I would be fine, she has never lived in the city before, she grew up in Greece, which is now turning crappy in itself.

Thanks in advance, we are hoping to get a good feel for the neighborhood so we can make a decision. I've had people drive/walk by - and the consensus is that the street is very nice, but downsides are - West of Culver, and the proximity to East High.

East is several blocks away. So, I think it wouldn’t have any impact and that area is actually a generally solid area: Census Block Group 006000-1 in Monroe County, New York

That median household income is only 1k below the metro figure for that period(2010-2014) and is in the area you are referring to.

Also, I believe that area of Beechwood just west of Culver has seen improvement and the Homestead Heights area just west of Culver/north of Beechwood has nearby areas that are similar in terms of MHHI: Census Block Group 005400-5 in Monroe County, New York

Census Block Group 005400-2 in Monroe County, New York

Greece is quite big and outside of areas where there is some apartments near the city line, it is generally solid to even upper middle class in the rest of the town.

Hope others will chime in and hope this information gives you an idea of the area you are looking into.

More information and a correction, the area exactly $1717 less than the metro figure for that period: https://rocwiki.org/Culver-Merchants...t=The+Triangle

It's a very safe area. I just confirmed on the crime map too and there hasn't been a single crime reported in the last year on the street. Now though, if your wife has never lived in the city, it may take some getting used to on her part. But I think she would feel safe in the day walking in the area.

I think ckhthankgod's post about the median income only being 1k below the metro figure also shows that it's a solid middle class neighborhood with a high percentage of homeowner's.

Let me also add, regarding East High. UR is now running that school. I haven't heard anything good or bad, but I would assume grades and behavior issues were improving.

Another thumbs up--you can walk to James Browns Place for a delicious breakfast, and Johnnie's latter.

I had friends who lived on Grand Avenue only a couple of houses east of Culver. The street was leafy, the people friendly and everything was well kept-up. Crime was not a problem.
