the census estimate for 2005 is 733,000... I don't know where you got 704,000....there is no way any county in the nation lost that much population. Besides that, Ontario County, which is just east of Monroe County gained 4000 people since 2000, therefore the entire rochester region actually did grow (albeit by a very small number of only about 2000).
I got the data from U.S. census facts, there is a conflict in the data which shows two different numbers. one is the one I stated 704,993 and their is the one i'minformed stated(733,00). either way there was a decline in monroe county but over all your right the fingerlakes area grew in population but they grew at a much slow rate than the same metro area's.
wow, great info from everyone and exactly what I needed to know. When I said I was worried about saftey, it was due to an article I read regarding Rochester being the murder capitol of NY.
Safety is not a concern. Violence is only limited to certian areas, just like every other city in the United States. As long as you are in a decent neighborhood, you'll be fine.
We have an opportunity to move to Rochester here in a couple of months. Can anyone help me out and tell me how much private and public school teachers make, please? BALLPARK figure would be great. I can't find the salery scale for teachers in that part of the county anywhere on the internet. THANK YOU!

Murder capitol of NY ???? Well, I'm kinda sure (without looking up the numbers) that the New York City metro area might have that honor... just by virtue of the much larger number of people. Maybe a rate per capita... I dunno. Whatever... The majority of murders here are in the higher crime areas of the inner city. Unless your planning on living there,,, not a large worry in my mind.
for 2005, Rochester did indeed have the highest per-capita murder rate (obviously NYC had the highest numbers by far....but it was very low per-capita)...but Rochester had less crime in 2006, and thus Buffalo now holds the title of "murder capital of New York State"

My friend that teaches in the city loves it. My friend that taught in Pittsford was indifferent - not because of the district - but because I think she probably chose the wrong career. Most people I know that work at BOCES are "built" for that atmosphere.
I really don't know what teachers top out at. I do know that given the cost of housing in the area teachers can live just about anywhere if they play their cards right; same for cops, firefighters etc. In fact, cops do even better in New York. Same story though in terms of getting the gig.
I don't have any contacts other than my friends. The one that was hired by the city recently was referred by a professor.
