Hi all, My girlfriend and I are looking into renting an apartment at station 55, near the public market, however we are not so sure about the safety of the area. Some friends said that the rough areas of the city generally start north of the railroad tracks, with station 55 being about as close to them as you can get. We have heard from some other friends that the public market area can get dicy at night. We currently live in henrietta, so we realize the transition from suburb to city is an immediate jump in crime rate, however I would like to hear from some nearby residents about the area.

I think most of those lofts are rented out ,so something is drawing people there. That area is not directly next to the shady residential area around the public market. You have the public market and commercial buildings separating you from the bad areas. That may keep the riff raff away.

Offering my 2 cents:

I shop at the public market on occasion. I know a few people that live near the public market (niagara st, central pk, pennsylvania ave, bay st, the "number" streets) and it's rough over there--worse during the warmer months. If safety is an issue, don't move over there--seriously.
I wouldn't want to live over there and I own my home in the 19th ward a couple streets over from the airport. It's a little better over here but not a whole lot.

If you really want to check out a street/neighborhood, drive by late at night.

Alright, I go to the public market every weekend. I never miss a shopping trip. There are times I will park in the neighborhood when the parkinglot is full in the busy summer months. But the foot traffic to the market is so heavy I am not worried about something happening. There are so many people out. However.... once you start to travel away from the market things get a tad sketchy. It isn't just the whole EAST SIDE GIRL syndrome (I DID live for a bit near Maplewood.. as did my family.... I do know the city life a bit)... but the market is not a place I would want to call home. The ONLY time I would head over there is Saturday Morning when the whole city is over there doing their shopping at the market.... that is it.....it is a rough area otherwise....

Default Station 55 safety

I've lived in the neighborhood (Hayward Avenue) for over 25 years now. when we first moved in, directly after college and looking for a cheap starter home to buy, it truly was the "wild west."

However, the immediate neighborhood has stabilized over the years, and we have very little problems with crime. The majority of issues are typical to the inner city...loud music, graffiti, etc.

As background, both my wife and I are "white," I am a school teacher in the RCSD (now, that was a true career mistake...if you have kids avoid the City at all costs!), my wife is a Budget Analyst for the government and I have a 15 year old daughter.

Would I have any qualms about the neighborhood? No. Would I walk unescorted around the neighborhood at 3am in the summer? No. But then again, there is nowhere in the City I would do that.

I would question the sanity of locating a residential building right next to the rail yards! The noise at night and the smell of the diesel trains must be a problem, as we can hear the trains a block away.

Pluses? Location next to Public Market. Negatives? Trains/noise.

My two cents.

That area is not a place I would care to live having worked in around the city most of my career. Too many problems and too many bad characters.

If you really want a taste, do as annken suggested, park near where you are looking to live at a couple of different times during the night on a couple of different days of the week. Then if you do decide to try it, see if you can get a lease month to month.

Seems like some nice big old houses converted into apartments in other areas such as Corn Hill and Park Ave that would be a better quality of life.

I would have no qualms at all walking around the South Wedge at night. I often did it when I lived there, with my dog or not...

It's odd, but when you are closer to them you must tune them out easier. When I lived one street over from the tracks in ER, I never remember being awoken by a train after a week or so. Yet in Henrietta, I was awoken by trains even 2 years in - and I was miles from the tracks there...
