Depends how you live. If you buy groceries 3x a week, one hour away is wasting a lot of time and gas. If once a week, not so bad.

I prefer to be able to hike right from home because we exercise daily. Unfortunately, kayaking requires driving. For a few years, even than was doable without any driving, just needed a portage cart. But that was not rural, either.
