Had a JB yesterday, the first in a long time and this morning, I have a shivery-gurgly feeling in my core. Haven't felt that in a long time. When I use to feel it, I thought it was just alcohol in general, but I've been drinking gin and haven't felt it and the supply of scotch and whiskey has been rather nil, so haven't felt it for a while.

I say well water because I tend to quaff the stuff, chilled, like .75 to a gallon a day.

So is there something in that particular combination?

0.75L to a gallon a day of gin? Or, any alcohol of the same proof?

quaff

/kwäf/3rd person present: quaffs; past tense: quaffed; past participle: quaffed; gerund or present participle: quaffing

1.
drink (something, especially an alcoholic drink) heartily.

That pretty much answers your question. Don't blame it on water.

No, no, I quaff .75 to a gallon of chilled well water a day.

Alcohol, I tend only to have a shot at a time.

Quaff?
Oh, my, the JB has turned you Irish!

Probably just coincidence, unless you have an intolerance for some component of the whiskey.

I checked and I don't see any recalls for whisky, although this came up:
Business Ethics Case Analyses: "Antifreeze" Found in Fireball Whiskey (2014-2015)
Quote:
The chemical that was actually in this drink was just a sweetening ingredient, propylene glycol, which is found in many other food products. It is used to absorb the water and make a stronger cinnamon flavor. This chemical is legal in the North American batches of Fireball but illegal in Europe due to their different Food and Drug Administration laws.

Ummm, okay.

No gurgles this morning (only had beer for my alcohol last night) but certainly had my chilled water.

Well, I hate to suggest this, but you may be experiencing the dreaded age-related loss of the ability to metabolize alcohol.

It happens to most of us. I used to be able to pour oceans of the stuff down the hatch and up early the next morning for work, feeling at worst "slightly under the weather"; now three beers over the course of the evening and I wake up at 2 am with my heart pounding, and feel like crud all the next day. I'm not all that old, only 58.

It also seems to vary with the type of liquor, so your experience of gin OK (for now), whiskey not, is similar to experiences I've had.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any solution other than climbing on the wagon.
