For me, dressing up means clean jeans and one of my 'nice' pair of boots, button shirt instead of t shirt. Seems to be common around here.

OP, you made me laugh when you mentioned your husband's turtleneck. Any guy wearing one of those loses his man-card immediately. Especially out in the sticks. You better tell him before he gets roughed up....

Not wise. You never know what tats or scars that turtleneck might be hiding.

If you see a guy in a long sleeve t-shirt or even a turtleneck in weather where others are wearing short sleeves, it would be much safer to be very polite instead roughing him up. Just sayin'

FWIW, If you need a "man card" you aren't a real man.

I got to thinking more about that last joking remark, and how various people react to differences in the way people dress. Obviously, Roy Rogers attire is not common in some areas of the country, and south Florida clothing and golf clothing might be seen as unusual out of context. People who reach a certain level of maturity or worldliness don't give it more than passing notice.

Your friendly "warning" is ridiculous. All it takes is one viewing of "Billy Jack" to know that the person who gets roughed up might not be the expected one. FWIW, I've never had any whippersnapper take obvious offense to my turtlenecks, but then I do have a CC permit and sometimes a bulge in my overshirt if it gets pulled in certain ways.

Anyway, why I am writing a follow up post - your post reminded me of a time in Birmingham in the 1980s when I was managing a set of packed midnight shows at a large multiplex theatre. One of those shows was "Red Dawn" or some such, that brought out all the post pubescent wanna-be Rambos in their clean camo, looking as much the part as possible with off-the-rack K-Mart outfits. One of the other shows was "Rocky Horror Picture Show," which had been playing for a few weeks and had a full "cast." I think that night there were two Rocky characters, three or four Magentas, various versions of Riff Raff, and a Columbia, plus about seventy regulars and a few virgins.

I had the Rocky Horror cast in a roped off area in front of their auditorium, where they were doing their thing, and the "Red Dawn" ticket holders in another area, waiting behind standee ropes for their auditorium to clear so they could go in. It was all I could do to keep from busting a gut when I saw how the camo guys were red in the face, tight lipped, and staring at the Rockys in fishnet tights, corsets, high heels, and full makeup. Having seen the cast in action booting out trolls, I had no doubt that if it came to a fight the Rockys would beat the camos to a pulp before tying them up in corset strings and dancing around them.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

Hi OP, also in a northern state, your neighbors in Michigan. Very casual here, but we have some events in the summer that people can, and sometimes do, dress up for. You do get a mix though, even at our Saturday night summer events during the peak of tourist season, so nobody is out of place, whether or not they dress up. But I will say, if I attend the big summer evening events, I enjoy seeing friends puttin’ on the style, just makes things seem a bit more festive. And a couple ladies I don’t know, but see around in the summer, wear beautiful clothes, and it’s an aesthetic pleasure to see them. I dress up rarely, and even then, dressing up is good flats and a nice top, don’t even own heels or a dress anymore. For everyday, I do throw things out after a few years when they start to get faded. My wardrobe is uninspired, but I love bright jewel colors for tee shirts and sweatshirts, and buy new ones in the off season sales so they are always bright and cheerful.

I've always called them nylons, or stockings. I don't own any now. I rarely wear dresses unless it's warm enough to go bare legs.

That's funny to me because I remember how "back in the day" we used to get all dolled up to go to the casinos in Vegas. Slinky dresses, hair done fancy, high heels and lots of makeup. Then, a few years later, we wandered into the casinos in Reno and Tahoe and people hadn't even changed out of the sweaty ski gear they'd worn on the slopes all day. Now, you head into a "indian" casino, and you'll see old ladies on their scooters, and barely legal girls wearing their saggy PJ bottoms and flip-flops like they're fresh from the local Walmart. Times change!

Yes loved the women that dressed up like that. Got lots of attention. Very feminine

Thanks for the advice, but also just to add to the lightheartedness of this thread -- and thanks again to everyone! -- but one of the nice things about being retired is that we no longer care what anyone thinks. In fact, my husband who dressed conservatively at work for 40-plus years is now trying to use the pandemic as an excuse to grow his hair long and now jokes about wanting to emulate Willie Nelson as his old age role model -- or at least regarding personal style.

And also speaking to certain clothes or phrases dating someone, he has worn the same style of aviator for about 40 years now. Yep, we are both dinosaurs in many ways, lol!

As we do get older and age we don't really care what anyone thinks or about the emphasis on dress on our own appearances. Don't even worry about that anymore. It's only about how one feels about themself. Of course I still prefer a woman to dress up.
