Square shaped cross ties are really good when can be found. It's hard to find them anymore. I know years ago at least in one area the railroads stopped selling them due to theft of new ones. How well it worked to stop theft I do not know. They were a monster to set but once in the ground they didn't move if properly braced. And the ones from back then didn't rot either. Creosote.

Railroad ties make great fence posts. Around here, they are about $10 used. Have to use a 12" diameter auger bit and drill as deep as possible. They last a long time. Not sure if they will last as long as hedge, but, probably close to it.
