Everyone always says Cali, But if you want true liberals check out VT. Even Ben and Jerry are gay. And there are more tree huggers than The WHOLE state of Washington with the little Spotted owl. There they love all But Republicans. And the goverment gives state aid to all you don't want to work don't the tax payers will support you.
Wow, I saw a civil thread answering someone's question about finding a certain type of town and out of nowhere a whole state has been painted with the dreaded "Liberal" brush.
Instead of throwing around mindless generalizations and being condescending about it, how about contributing something of merit to the thread? Liberal happens to be what the OP is looking for, after all.
It's rough being a liberal who enjoys small town / country life. I love the political and social climate of the big city, but I can't take the hectic pace all the time.
I know of only two small liberal towns....Oberlin and Yellow Springs in Ohio. However, I'd like to move from Ohio, so I'm trying to find a friendly, progressive small town.
Any suggestions?
How about New Paltz NY? I think that's perfect for you, it's a small liberal college town. I beleive the mayor was marrying gays a couple of years ago. Anything goes you should love it. Check it out.
Try Roosevelt New Jersey, somewhat of an eccentric paradise. About 900 residents, lots of artists, interesting history, conveniently located, and votes about 85% democratic.
It's a town called Northampton, in the western part of Massachusetts known as the pioneer valley, and on the fringe of the Berkshires. It's truly a fantastic, liberal, progressive, quirky, insanely quirky, vibrant place. It's nickname IS the Paradise City. Tracey Kidder wrote a book about it. Many weiters call it home. So do many musicians and artists. There is a thinking-vibe to the area, thanks to the five colleges - Smith, in Northampton, and UMass, Amherst College, and Hampshire College in Amherst and Mt Holyoke in South Hadley.
Really, you should check it out. I grew up a few towns away, lived there until a few years ago, and since it was so familiar to me, to an extent never understood what all the fuss was about. Until I moved to Rhode Island. Noho.com is a message board there. Masslive.com is a western Mass site, and there's plenty more to explore online.
Good luck.
Burlington, VT! It's a small "city" up here of just under 40,000, but the small rural towns are just outside, around 15 minutes, away from the downtown area. It has the feel of a much larger city, but in a comfortable rural setting. The political climate is very, very liberal. In the recent elections, Bernie Sanders was elected by a huge margin to the US Senate, and he's a far-left liberal and self-proclaimed socialist. His opponent was not exactly your typical Republican and might have passed as a centrist Democrat in almost every other state. The people are generally very friendly, and the scenery around town and the state is really great. If you do end up missing the real BIG city life, Montreal, Boston, and New York City are easy day drives away.
Pop 26,000 + another 26,000 college students with art school and Paul Simon Public Policy Institute
Last election the county voted 20% Green Party
Beautiful countryside, lots of forests, lakes, orchards and wineries.
Very Affordable
Moderate climate...gets cold with a little snow, hot in the summer, but not for too long.
Enough big box retail to make life convenient.
Where are we? Look at the bottom of a map of Illinois for the Shawnee National Forest. To the West you will see an area with lots of lakes and you should see Carbondale, home to Southern Illinois University. I moved to Murphysboro (smaller town, slightly to the West) two years ago from Houston. Love it.
Frostburg Maryland is a liberal college town with more conservative rural outer area's. It is also within a 2 to 3 hour drive to Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington D C.

There is nothing dreaded about the liberal brush in this post. As this is what they are looking for. I described VT to the T without being mean about it. If I offended someone I am sorry, but this is what the poster is looking for. I have been all over the country even to San Fran , and VT is probobly the Best state for liberals. They have laws and political views that fit liberal to the T, as I said. And it is a BEAUTIFUL state. Just cause I think they are too exstream don't mean the original poster wont like it. Check out Burlington VT or any other town in VT if you don't beleive me. As I said it is a very BEAUTIFUL state with very strong liberal views. I didn't mean to offend anyone by stating that in my pre-post but that is what it is like, And that is what they are looking for. Check out the VT forum, even ppl that live there refer to it as I did.
