Davis is the obvious choice but expensive, Dixon might work. There are little Delta towns like Walnut Grove and Courtland, not sure how the schools are out that way--they are not yet turned into suburbs because the Delta is too much at risk for flooding.

Also try Winters or parts of Vacaville. Good house deals in Woodland right now, but you would probably want to send your kids to private school. Davis has top-notch schools but you will not get more than 1200 sq ft for 325K.

I don't know if anyone mentioned LINCOLN and PENRYN both towns are off of I-80, northeast of SAC.

For OP, why west of Sac? Many of the suggestions made are east. If you really want to be to the west, Davis seems a logical place to check out, though I wouldn't call it Hallmark-like, and homes may be pricey. Some of the delta towns are certainly picturesque, but the commute and the prices may rule them out. At least they're nice to visit (e.g., Locke).

OP, most of Sacramento's nicest small towns are east of it. In the foothills. It is a beautiful area.

What about Winters? There are lots of cute little shops. It is rural, by Yolo County standards. Its a small town with lots of charm. I don't know much about the schools though. It is about 15-20mins southwest of Davis/Woodland.

If they mean West Sacramento, in particular, cheaper housing can be found but I would hesitate to live there due to crime rate.
