Good morning everyone. This is the third time this has happened to us. I have a 14 year old gas water heater (75 gallon) for our 2 story 3400 sq/ft home.

This morning (and I noticed it a bit yesterday) when my wife and I were taking a shower, no hot water was available. Mind your it is just us two. We use minimal water. The showers was the first hot water use of the day.

I was doing some work in the garage yesterday on my car and left the garage door open for the better part of the day. I noticed that the last time this happened, it was a similar scenario with the garage door.

Is this normal? Any ideas and what I can do to fix it?

Last time this happened, I increased the temperature on the water heater and it seems like it didn't matter.

Something is wrong. Might even be hazardous - CO2 danger.

You need to call a plumber. Don't be surprised if you need a new water heater.

I was wondering if that were the case. So i take it that what i described above is not normal? I will reach out to a plumber today.

It sounds like a problem on the combustion side of things. The water heater is not able to get enough air for combustion. So you provide the required air when you open the garage.

I think I may have misstated. The issue of not getting any hot water happens when the garage is open for most of the day. When it is closed (which it is most of the time), it seems to work just fine.

Is there what you were meaning Ivoc?

Same problem. You are getting different results when you change the air to the water heater. The reversal would be less of a concern...that is it stops working right when it gets more air. But either situation requires a service call. Should not happen.

Maybe your pilot light is getting blown out by the air current when your garage door is open? Pretty strange scenario. Any which way I'd get it checked as you could be having issues of incomplete combustion which may result in carbon monoxide build up which is far more dangerous than a few cold showers!

Good luck.
