We used Allied Van Lines to move an entire household of goods from NJ to CA and they were great. Unsure of cost though, because in was paid for with job relocation. For moving a car would recommend using a company that specializes particularly in vehicle transport.

Whatever you do check into the company before signing on the dotted line. I recently moved again (CA to MO) and it was a nightmare. A.S.A.P. Relocations Inc. had a great ad, price and pre-move support but after they had my stuff were rude, dishonest, and unresponsive. For two weeks they couldn't even tell me where my shipment was, and when it did show up (3 weeks late) I had some damaged items. Be selective, and check into reputations.

For the car moving, you might contact the local American Youth Hostel. I know in New York, the AYH was arranging to get cars driven cross country. I imagine that they do that locally as well. That may be your cheapest option.
