Hello dear members. The things I noted in Salt Lake city is:
1. That perhaps without car will be hard to move around city. And my mom is first time in the U.S. and the only person who knows English who comes with her it is her 18 y.o. sister (also she have 5 years old daughter)
2. That in 180,000 population city perhaps it will be hard to find a job (I remember advice of someone who told us that maybe NY will be greater for new comers to find job who don't know English)
3. How much having high school or some other higher degree affects on our ability of finding job (because my 18y.o. sister who knows English, have only High School education)

Please, any real advice and estimation about our chances for success in Salt Lake.

Mom and sister have chosen Salt Lake because there's a lots of LDS members-friends, and they think that it will be easier to move with spiritual support from her friends, but if Salt Lake provide poor job oportunities, then maybe we should reconsider our decision?

The whole valley has a million people. It's hard to get a job anywhere without English, unless it's very low paying jobs. It might be easier in some industries where people speak her language. New York is extremely expensive and 2 people alone would only be able to find housing in the most run down and dangerous areas. Some important questions are, what language does she speak, and is she legally allowed to work?

Thanks for your reply, DelaneyRudd

Yes, she has work permition as well as my 18 years old sister who will accompany her.

My mom speaks Russian. And she has experience in low paying jobs like dishwasher (she worked as dishwasher few years). Plus she got some bakery vocational degree not long ago. She's not afraid working such jobs as cleaner/etc, because she already did it in Russia for a long time.

Yes, I don't think that we should consider NY (too expensive). I think that after deducting airtickets costs, her remained money will be $3-$4k for living. I suppose it is not a lot, and they need cheap accomodation.

To access area with million people I afraid in Salt Lake you will have to have a car which they can't afford anyway. So I am thinking, maybe it would be wiser if I will recommend them to choose a city with Subway transportation available at least?

If she stays in the city itself and not the suburbs, the bus system is pretty good. There is a Russian community here so they may also help them. Certainly her bishop should be able to help. But she should start learning English so life will be easier for her.

Utah Transit Authority
This is the cities mass transit system. Finding a job in a restaurant or hotel shouldn't be too difficult, though she may need some help from someone local who speaks Russian.

The Church has excellent employment services here so if you do find an area to live in make sure to contact your bishop and he can help you with that.
And I can also say from experience that this is a great place to live (just one reason ) because the church welfare system is amazing and has been so much help to us in these very difficult times.

That sounds great!
I found great deal of buying air tickets for three family members just for $1500 (including JetBlue transfer until slc)

Now the question is, how much apartments cost in Salt Lake city
Do you think renting 1BR isolated apartment without sharing it with neighbors is real for $500 per month in Salt Lake city? (or maybe cheaper?)

Earl, if your mother is LDS (you didn't actually say one way or the other), there would be an employment specialist in the ward or branch she attends who could help her. If she were to get a job at Deseret Industries, they have on-site English classes. There are also a number of other options for people to learn English, and they are free. Finally, there is a sizable Russian community here in Salt Lake City. I know because my husband and I helped mentor a Russian (Azerbaijani, actually) family who came here as refugees a number of years ago.

Yes, they likely qualify for low income housing. Without the breaks its possible but 600 is more reasonable.

My mother is LDS (we was Church Members for a long time before). My sister too. Both baptized and has strong testimony.

That's awesome! Even $600 is not a big price in comparision with prices we paid while we lived in Moscow/Moscow area in Russia. But of course even $600 can be a huge burden if my sister/Mom won't find good enough job.

What you mean by "without the breaks"? The houses from the papers?

We would consider a room for three, but is it real to find owner who will allow living in a room for three person?
Another option is basement. In comparision to 1BR apartment is it much cheaper?
