Since I can choose any area of greater SLC, one consideration would be where they don't seem to go at all, even if they are "safe". I'd prefer to not have to see them.
Well, you're unlikely to see them in over 98% of the neighborhoods in Salt Lake City. Given that you're coming from the environment that you describe, you'll probably think you've died and gone to heaven.

Spot on Katz ! I have been to San Fran and even there although are alot of homeless no issues with people jumping on you either. Can be just as easily attacked anywhere by a non homeless person with a knife. I feel you are stereotyping all of them . Friend worked with the homeless in Salt Lake when she lived there and not an issue.Like i said some people are homeless for a variety of reasons and you could end up like that one day through no fault of your own if you have no support network or life changes all of a sudden. Areas are fine, some say West Valley an issue but having been there it isnt ! Maybe some again see people who are different from them and assume the worst. If you are not involved in crime unlikely to have an issue. Like Katz said you wont find an issue . Utah is crazily safe downtown and in suburbs. Im looking forward to being back for a visit in a few weeks time :-)
