Your best bet is to get opinions from people around exactly where you'll be living. I know places in SA that get great Sprint but poor AT&T, and vice versa. It's very situation-dependent.

The Hero is supposed to finally get Android 2.1 pushed to it this month, which will greatly increase the number of apps you can get. It's currently got version 1.6 which severely limits the Hero's awesomeness.

Sprint: best value hands down.
Only consider att if you're going to travel to small towns around San Antonio.

I have sprint and get dropped calls in various areas of the Hill country. You also can't get a signal when traveling the area north of Fredericksburg to around Brownwood (a large area!). It's a remote area.

Can I upgrade my current phone to this version? I know that mine is different from people who have had their Heros for a couple of months. I just got mine on June 1st.

I hate contract cellphone carriers which is why I have Cricket.

But If I had to choose, DEFINITELY Sprint! They have the the TRULY $69.99 unlimited everything plan. AT&T does not.

if you have a hero, no matter when it was made, yes you can upgrade. I don't think Sprint has announced the official update yet though....

Last year I suffered heavily with the lack of cell phone signal in the hill country, particularly around the Llano area. I was flying in a non-radio equipped airplane and hit some heavy winds. With no radio, I couldn't call a weather briefer, so I tried to cell phone dial into some of the smaller airports along my route and get an automatic weather analysis. Try dialing a number with no hands. I had to keep the airplane stick in my knees, my left hand on the throttle and my right thumb on the phone. Well, lack of signal made that impossible, so I resorted to trying to figure out what direction the wind was coming from. I knew it was coming from the north, but I couldn't figure out what angle, precisely. The heavy headwind was cutting down my speed and I wasn't sure if I was going to have enough gas to make it to the closest irstrip for fuel. I had to swoop down low and look at the ripples on ponds to see where the wind was blowing. Also, I remember a farmer told me cattle graze with their ass into the wind. I got it figured out, but damn you SPRINT. Now, flying around SA is another story...there are WAY TOO MANY cell phone towers. I gotta dodge those suckers.

Used Sprint as my only cell phone carrier...never had a problem and get great reception, even in the Hill Country north of Boerne. I would recommend them.
