Well if that is the case, and if those resources are available and adequate, they are greatly underutilized. It just seems some parents make deep issues over nothing but are curiously silent on those that matter the most.

It is completely free to go see a psychiatrist or therapist with Medicaid and CHIP, but there is a low, annual fee for CHIP. Carelink is not insurance, so you have to pay down the balance in monthly payments, but the program considers your salary when figuring out maximum payments.

A lot of people don't know they can qualify for these programs or they have too much pride to even apply.

Not sure if the stigma is that strong but before no one wanted to admit they had mental health issues, it was a sign of weakness, and the same extend to their children aka 'not my child syndrome'.

As far as the incident in the OP, it still is not clear if there were any actual weapons, the last thing reported was that the school bus video is being reviewed and two are still in custody.

If parents actually parented and even halfway cared about how their kids were doing with school rather than using the system as an 8-3:30 free babysitting service you wouldn't have this problem.

Parents don't care about education -> students don't care about education -> San Antonio ends up next to last on whatever smartest cities list was compiled a week or two ago.

And 8 times out of 10 the psychiatrist or therapist will put the child on drugs. Problem solved.

Only medical doctors can write prescriptions (psychiatrists). Psychologists and therapists (without M.D.'s) can't put your child on medication.

let's insert "some" in front of parents. There are many moms and dads around here who are extremely committed to education and involved in their children's schools. The outstanding parent volunteer base within NEISD alone is unlike anything I've seen in any other state I have lived in.

That's true, but is Taft HS in NEISD?
(edit: seriously, because I don't have any kids and have no clue who goes to what school except for what all the Churchill HS signs in the neighborhood tell me)

This can also be monkey see, monkey do.

Some kids see how earlier this year the viral rumors about suicide pacts and schools shootings allowed many to skip class and have it excused for the most part. How easy is it for a hysterical parent to go to the school and tell them they cannot give their child an unexcused absence if they were just staying home for safety.

But if it is the students and some of the parents themselves who are spreading these rumors they should find their absences unexcused and have them make up the day on a Saturday (or a series of them).
