What are your thoughts on this?! If you're in the field what do you think you'll do? It's been a bit discouraging for me since I'm trying to get in the education field for about 2 years. I started in 09 but life and financial problems had to stop and started training again last summer. I'm currently a substitute at a school district here. I have the Generalist 4-8 exam that I passed, but since all that changed too I'm taking the Gen. EC-6 soon and later on the Special Ed and Bilingual. Any tips?! Good luck to everyone in the field and those like me trying to get into it. Pretty sad that they're doing cutbacks in education

Just be glad it's not as bad as DC, yet. They are closing down schools and are planning on having 60 students per high school class.

An interesting thing John Folks brought up is that the 22 children per class limit is just an average, so some classes already have 30 students. If the limit is raised, some classes here could have 35-40 students. Some states already have students taking basic courses on the computer at school while they are monitored by a facilitator.

oh wow that's horrible! Had no idea with DC. I've just mostly been paying attention to what's going on here. Really hope that doesn't happen here!

I'm certified EC-6 with ESL and Spec Ed. I've been subbing for 4 years, trying to get into one of the districts near me. This year, I'm not even trying. I see people already working to have either lost their position, or will lose it. I've seen counselors doubling up on schools they service. Certified teachers are excited to get IA jobs. I could go on, but I won't.

My honest advice to you is, unless you have money to burn, don't even bother to take the exams yet. I would wait until things look better. Once you are certified (which also costs money), you have five years to get 150 CE hours, which are hard to get if you are not in a district. Plus, since it appears that districts seem to prefer newly-certified teachers, a delay might work to your advantage.

Just watched the movie "Waiting For Superman" which focused mainly on DC schools and how they are trying to revamp the failing system.
