Officials say $30 million worth of roadway is needed on the city's far [West] Side, and the Texas Department of Transportation continues to plan for it.

As it stands, TxDOT has nearly $8 million set aside for the project. Bexar County is expected to pay for the rest of it, and then get reimbursed by TxDOT later.

Of course, no timetable is set. The article is right that the growth is coming, whether they want it or not. But for the expansion of SH 211 to be effective in relieving congestion, TXDOT needs to expand the feeder roads (i.e., FM 471, FM 1957 and SH 16), extend SH 151 and (really) make Loop 1604 a true freeway (at least between IH 35 and US 90). IMHO.

But then again, any plans showing that TXDOT is starting to get the picture that improvements are needed is a good thing.

I've been on both sections of SH211 (Hwy 90 to Potranco and Culebra to Bandera) many times and I do not see much traffic on the Culebra/Bandera road. Perhaps it would pick up if the other section were built. They need to widen Potranco and Culebra first.

Isn't it funny, though how Medina County is already widening FM 1283 (the "continuation" of Culebra Rd out to Medina Lake), but Bexar County hasn't done anything about widening Culebra? Guess we know which county has it's stuff together...

The Texas Transportation Commission last week approved the pass-through financing agreement with Bexar County to fund the construction of the missing section of SH 211. Working on getting more details...

Hey Brian, I tweeted you this the other day:

Brian, could you elaborate a bit on this funding and what it means? when construction will begin, etc.

Sorry, I hardly ever look at my tweets.

Pass-through financing is where a local agency (in this case, Bexar County) fronts the money for a state highway project, then TxDOT pays them back over a period of time using a formula based mostly on traffic counts on the improved road. It's the same mechanism that was used for the Blanco Road widening currently underway.

I'm working on getting the details about the start date and expected completion.

I couldn't find a past thread for it, so I'll post it here: a pass-through agreement with the City of Bulverde was also approved to widen SH 46 through Bulverde. For those of you that don't know the history of this project, Bulverde initially thumbed their noses at TxDOT when they proposed to widen SH 46. Looks like more reasonable folks are running the show there now.

Did the land owners finally agree to sell the land between Potranco and Culebra?
