My husband and I are flying into SAT next Tuesday. I'm from Austin, but he's never been to Texas. We are ending the day at the riverwalk (of course), but what to show him during the day?

Not the Alamo/Wax Museum - my kids want to see that when we are back in SAT before our flight out.

Not the zoo, Sea World, or Six Flags...

What else would you want to show someone visiting for a day?

It depends, what does your husband like to do? How much of Austin has he seen? There's always Fredericksburg.
Missions around San Antonio?

Umm...don't listen to the negatives. Go do a tour of the missions...the Alamo isn't the only mission in San Antonio. The kids might enjoy the Ghost Tour downtown. I loved it. Go to The Witte Museum, see the McNay, the San Antonio Museum of Art, go to Brackenridge Park and ride the train, check out La Cantera, a lovely mall next to Six Flags. Explore the King William area. Market Square. Take a tour on those two wheelie thingies (?) I forgot what they are called.

Mission trail. Ideally, if it's not too hot (or you can handle the heat and you leave early in the day), ride bikes from Blue Star all the way down to Mission Espada. Or cut it short at any of the 4 missions. Each are beautiful with wonderful grounds, each very different. If cycling is not possible, it's definitely drive-able, but get out near the river and walk around the trail a bit.

If you want to stick with downtown, do the historic walking tour. I can't recall all the sites, but it'll take you to St Joseph's Church, Spanish Governer's "palace", and a number of other interesting sites downtown.

Another recommendation for the Missions, they are really an under-appreciated piece of local history!

Otherwise, most of the historical sights around the downtown can easily fill a day!

Thanks for the input! I've been to SAT dozens of times, and even lived there briefly - but I had never really done any sightseeing.

The missions or the historical downtown tour sound like great options. I'll google some info tomorrow.

I really appreciate the tips!

If he likes history or museums you can stop in at the Institute of Texan Cultures. It's close to the Riverwalk but I don't know what their summer hours are so you would want to check their website.

Don't just go to the Riverwalk and fight the crowds between restaurants. Do a boat tour there. The tour narration provides an overview of the history of downtown. Perfect for a quick visit.
