The Texas plates you had on your F150 would have "TRUCK" stamped on the face. Having truck plates on a passenger car is advertising that they don't belong to that vehicle.

Wouldn't the old plates say "Texas Truck" on them? How can a cop miss that?

It's from a revenue generation camera. The priority is revenue, not justice. I don't think they can zoom in enough to see the "Texas Truck" part. Also, what if the Mitsubishi had license plate covers that covered the "Truck" part? Who knows? Point is, MattTx is now in this predicament and we need to all mobilize to the rescue and help him out!

Beats me. I am confused about this.

I had a DPS officer scold me once during a traffic stop when I was 19 for having "farm truck" plates while living away from the farm to attend school so some cops do notice.

Update:

First, I called the dealership and they explained that it was impossible that they could be stolen because they have a strict policy of destorying plates on all trade-ins.

Next, I called the city of Rowlett and the citation was dropped. I spoke to a nice lady that investigated the issue and after digging around for awhile, she explained that DMV reissued the plates using the same alphanumeric digits but their database was still showing me as the registered owner.

She knew something was wrong when the vehicle in the photo was clearly not what the plates were showing registration for.

Case closed.

So wait it wasn't the evil revenue generators to which half this thread was dedicated to?

Good to see these things can be taken care of quickly. Will DMV be contacted to remove your association with the new plates?

I wasn't dedicating this thread to "evil revenue generators" but I am going to have to side with Soviet on this. Red light cameras are pointless and borderline illegal if not illegal. They are placed there just to make money for both the company that installs them and the city that allows them. It isn't the same as a cop writing a ticket which is enforcing the law. Also too many mistakes can be made just like what happened to me. A cop wouldn't make this type of mistake if he had caught that person on patrol, running a red light and pulled him over.

I will be contacting DMV as soon I can to get my name removed completely from these plates. I still don't understand this mixup but I am just glad they were willing to do so over the phone. The lady was really friendly and helpful about the whole situation.

Thank you Soviet and everyone else for the advice and help.

Don't forget, when selling or trading in a vehicle, it is up to you (the previous owner) to notify the TxDMV by completing a Vehicle Transfer Notification. When you submit the form a remark will be added to the vehicle record which shows the date you sold the vehicle. This can protect you if the buyer fails to promptly transfer the title.

Dealers are also required to remove the plates and registration stickers from any vehicles they buy or take in trade, but that's not always the case. I had a car I traded back in 2008 show up with an unpaid parking ticket about six months later. I sent copies of all the sale paperwork to the DMV and never heard a word about it, I've had my license run by the SAPD (for volunteer work) and nothing came up, so I can assume it was taken care of.

But I am glad it yours was cleared as well, I guess the allegations of 'revenue generation' are not as valid as some people claim...

Cheers! M2

Whew! Great to hear. Absolutely wonderful to hear.

However, my allegation of revenue generation still stands. Thankfully, however, the City of Rowlett, Texas engages in honest revenue generation. And that is better than dishonest revenue generation. Great job, MattTx!! . A wonderful New Year's gift.
