We moved here about 6 months ago and thought we'd found a vet we liked. However, in order to get our dog groomed, she needs the bordatella and distemper shots. I have no arguement with getting the vaccinations, but when I called our vet, the price was $22 for bordatella and $27 for distemper. Not a problem; I can do that. However, when the receptionist told me that an exam was required for the distemper shot at an additional $53, I balked. She told me the exam is necessary because of reactions to the distemper shot. This dog is healthy.

My dog has had these shots as needed (though not in TX yet) and I don't remember needing to have an exam for either of them. The price she quoted me effectively doubles the cost of the two vacs.

So I guess I have 2 questions:

1. Is this a reasonable charge? If it is, could you explain to me why the distemper needs an exam? It seems like an excuse to tack on an extra fee and if the exam is a good idea, I'd like to understand why it's necessary. (She had an exam at this clinic shortly after we move here.)

2. Does anyone have any recommendations for good vet care for dogs in the Helotes area?

Thank you.

We use Town & Country just down the road inside 1604 at Bandera and Prue Road. I am sure they charge an exam fee even when coming in for a shot. I'm not 100% sure though. You can call them at 684-1448. We've been using them for almost 9 years for all of our pets.

Am not sure if there are vets out there anymore who don't charge some sort of office fee even when coming in for something really minor....just like people doctors do.

I just used a mobile clinic here for my cats' shots. Lots of people had their dogs there. I'm in Dallas, but I'm positive they do this in SA as well. I would contact Locke Hill Feed Store and ask them when they have their mobile pet vax, it's usually on the weekends. Google "mobile pet vaccinations San Antonio" and I'm sure you'll get some hits, if you're looking to avoid an office visit fee.

Welcome to Vanguard Veterinary Associates, P.C.'s Web Site!

Second the Vanguard recommendation. You can even make an appointment to get the shots at their clinic (1604/Redland Rd) for the same cost, if no exam is required.

I almost took my dog to this mobile clinic. They hold them at various Petco locations around town.

I take my dogs to Castroville Animal Hospital. I've never been charged for an exam fee for shots or nail cuts, etc. If YOU need to see the Vet then you'll be charged, otherwise you will only work with the Vet Techs.

If it were me I'd just go with the veterinarian that you plan on using. For my vet it's a wellness check and if I have to bring them in for other things they don't charge for it if the pet has had one recently.

But they already told him/her they were going to charge for an exam even though the dog had just had one.
