I found a 2 bedroom for lease in this area and was wondering if this is a good fit for a single mom with a 6 year old? (crime?? close to shopping, kid-friendly, good schools, etc)

I would think so. You can walk across Broadway to the kiddie park, museum, zoo, Brackenridge park. Places to eat and likely decent schools. I'm sure KC will come along and expound on this.

I like mahncke park, it's a fun/funky area. You have some nice boutiques and a tire shop or two. Central market - San Antonio's designer supermarket is close by. Easy access to downtown and the Northside via 281. The zoo, botanical center and brackenridge park are all with in a mile if not closer.

great area though not many kids in this area (not that young at least). i do see a few teenagers walking up and down the road randomly, but there really isnt a lot of foot trafffic here unless youre on broadway. im not sure i would call it kid-friendly, since there arent many kids (that ive seen) around the age of yours.

shopping, tons of nice retail shops. some of it is higher quality and the price is reflected on this. wal mart and big lots are down the road if thats your thing.

It's not as scary as it seems. It's close enough to Hawthorne Academy over on Josephine, which is an excellent SAISD charter school that's PK-8. SAISD isn't ALL bad. Some of the in district charter schools (Hawthorne, Bonham, Austin, etc) are great schools.

There are a good number of what you could call choice-students in SAISD charters. I send my second oldest (and her younger sister starting in the fall) to an SAISD charter school even though we can afford to send her elsewhere.

To the OP, the area you're looking in is so close to what is unofficially SA's kid district (zoo, parks, kiddie park, museum, future location of children's museum) plus neat little places to eat and shop. Love that 'hood.

I know the area, but not enough about it to give it thumbs up/down. It's about the only place in 78209 I don't know well. Just haven't had to opportunity to do any business in there.

I love the area and we considered buying there but at the time it was more expensive than Lavaca (now it's switched). I know many families living there, some of whom send their kids to Bonham, which is in Southtown, but it's also near Hawthorne.

However, as is the case with most revitalizing areas, you really need to see it. Some blocks are excellent, others less so - at least they don't look as nice, even though they're probably safe. Everyone I know in the area loves living there, and it's close to lots of kid friendly stuff.
