Ok, the taxpayer will get stuck with the bill anyway. Doctors and scientist in India attended school in a hut and all we get are fat cats and extravagant schools

Sure thing.

Medical college in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here's a few pics of those "huts"...

And this is how "easy" it is to get in one...

You're right, we don't need no better education here!

MMM...your post is one of the best I've seen in a while. I tried to rep you, but guess I've done too much in the past.

Our K-12 school system is nothing to brag about. Fortunately it is still better than many developing countries in terms of access and quality for the average citizen (i.e. not wealthy or gifted) but moving in the wrong direction.

We still have the best universities and post-grad education in the world, but more and more they are used by international students with better qualifications.

We need to understand that we'd be better off investing more in schools and less in our military (and don't mean any disrespect to our service people, they are awesome).

Ironic since the actual Taj Mahal is in India.

While it may not be everyone's cup of tea and may not work for all students, here are a couple of links to what is IMHO one of the most interesting and innovative ways to use technology to help our teachers teach/coach and our children learn and excel.

Khan Academy: The future of education? - 60 Minutes - CBS News

Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education | Video on TED.com

Khan Academy is amazing...I refer many students (and my own children) to it for additional explanation. Teachers can also use free apps to create their own lessons/videos for their students. And students can use the same apps to for presentations/projects, etc.

I teach in a recently built school in NISD and trust me it is no Taj Mahal! It is obviously more updated than schools in NISD built in the 80's-90's, but it is not what you are describing. High schools are built "big" to accomodate the mass influx of students that attend there. Brennan was the last HS NISD built and it was built to deal with overcrowding at Stevens/Warren and to address the huge number of folks moving into that area. To think these buildings are some type of paradise is crazy. They're pragmatic and if you do not like it I suggest you get involved in board meetings. They are held monthly and are free/open to the public.

I won't join this argument one way or another because I have no specifics too back my point of view. I will say however, being in the commercial side of education (work for a large publishing conglomerate), I have noticed that at the education conferences in Austin, Dallas, and the Valley, that 5 years ago you couldn't spit without hitting a booth from an architect firm. I thought at the time "man, I'm in the wrong business"
