I have 2 young children and I'm already starting to think about where they are going to go to high school. Which schools here are known to be academic AND sports "power houses," public or private? Example, when I lived in SLC, UT schools like Bingham (academics/football), Alta (football), Cottonwood (football) Skyline (academics, multiple noteworthy sports teams, historic/legacy football powerhouse) and Juan Diego Catholic (academics, state championships in multiple sports) seemed to always have strong sports teams as well as academics. Does San Antonio have comparable school(s) that stand out? Thanks.

Churchill (especially for swimming), O'Connor, Clark, Johnson (track)

Note that all of these are Division IV and V schools, so the athletics are good because their teams are selective. The bigger the school, the more selective they can be, so because of the sheer number of kids in these schools, your kid may not be good enough to get on the team, let alone get a lot of playing time in the sport.

I've read that in girls' volleyball, ALL of the girls in some of the NEISD and NISD schools competitive in those sports play in summer select leagues. That's an expensive commitment in terms of time, money and travel. I imagine that's the case in other sports as well.

Thank you so much for identifying these schools and giving me a good idea on how competitive they are to make their teams. Sounds like kids need to join sports leagues in order to develop and focus their talents in order to have a chance at making the teams at the bigger schools. How about the private schools? Right now I live close to Antonian. I now they're known for academics, but are they known for sports too? Do they recruit young athletes from sports leagues to their schools? Do a lot of colleges recruit there as well as the other aforementioned schools?

Antonian probably has the most competitive athletic programs, on average, among private and parochial schools in the city. They seem to make the deepest playoff runs the most consistently of any of the schools around here. None of the private and parochial schools are competitive at football, arguably the king of high schools sports, if that matters. They also compete for state championships in their own organization that is separate from the public schools UIL.

You should probably ask the school about whether their programs get many kids signed to athletic scholarships.

I agree w/ the comment about being in club sports. It IS a hefty price to pay (I refuse to pay $1800 for 6 months of sports) --- I sure wish some of these school would adopt a similar rule in other schools (for example, in Missouri) that if your kid is playing club ball, they cannot play school sports b/c the club ball interferes w/ the school schedule of sports. However I did hear that even if your kid doesn't play in school sports, the college recruits do still visit the club ball tournaments, etc.

Boerne Champion was recently ranked number 38 in Texas, and the number 1 regular curriculum (non-specialized) in San Antonio for academics.
