Hi everyone, we are moving from Florida to San Antonio within the next month. We have 2 medium size dogs and need a larger yard preferably with at least 1/2 acre. Can anyone offer an advice on which areas we should look into. We have no children and will be in the up to $250,000 price range. We want a safe neighbourhood but don't care to much for developements with cookie-cutter houses and want something a little more unique if possible. We will be renting prior to moving so if anyone has any leasds on short term rentals that would be great. Thanks!

This post was buried in another unrelated thread and it was suggested that it be made its own thread (thanks Steel Man ). I'm breaking the rules and bumping it since I was at work all day and didn't have a chance to do it until now. I'll counsel myself on the forum rule of no bumping.

We live outside the 1604/281 area......it will be hard to get an 1/2 in the 250's out this way until you get into Bulverde and Spring Branch. There are some neighborhoods in Canyon Springs, Stone Oak, Lookout Canyon, Summerglen and Moutain Lodge that have the larger 1/3 acre+ lots but the majority of them would be over 250,000+ and more into the high 300's +. Timberwood Park may have a few in that price range and lot size but you would need to do a little digging, there are many homes for sale and it would be worth it to drive the area when you get here. If you were interested in going a little farther, say to Spring Branch there would be a MUCH larger selection. Here are a few neighborhoods: Riverwood, Cypress Springs, Whispering Hills, Windmill Ranch....some of these you can get even more land.

It would really depend upon your commute and where you would like to be settled and since you do not have to consider the schools you can extend your choices.

Good Luck and Welcome to SA!

You're probably going to have to look a little further outside of town as the post above mentions. To get into a 1/2 acre lot within the city limits would be tough. Spring Branch, New Braunfels, maybe Bulverde, etc...

Try in the 78253 area. Talley Road outside 1604. There are a few places with half acre and up. Some are older homes ( mine is 17 years old) but there are at least 2 places that are still building new homes.

Default maybe try Oak Creek

You might try looking in Oak Creek (the older section, North of Military). It's the neighborhood I live in, and the lots range from 1/3 to a little over an acre, with most being 1/2 acre or more. Not the neighborhood for everybody, as our HOA is voluntary so their aren't ammenities like a pool and such. And the homes are older (about half are around 27 years and the other half are around 16 years), so they're not energy efficient at all and many need updating. Also, it's on the Far West side of town, right next to Sea World. However, homes are mostly all under $250K (I think only 1 or 2 that have sold in the last couple of years were over $250K). If you search on www.mysa.com, search by subdivision (Oak Creek, not Oak Creek Northwest) and make sure you check the map to see which section of Oak Creek it's in. The section that is North of Military is the one with the larger lots (old timers know it as "Oak Creek Estates"). I think there are currently only two homes for sale in this section, one on Copperfield and one on County Cork.

I think that Fair Oaks Ranch would be worth looking into with one drawback, housing prices start at your top end.

La Vernia has many community's with half acre lots. The commute is about 35 minutes to down town. Great schools and many custom homes to choose from.

As mentioned above, Hollywood Park. It is an incorporated township within the city of San Antonio. You'll find lots ranging from 2 acres to less than 1/2. The houses range from brand new to older 1940's homes. It is a wonderful investment as it is bordered by other higher priced areas. There is a wonderful sense of community there and virtually crime free.

Do place it high on your list of areas to check out and take a drive through. You may find you do not wish to look elsewhere.
