There are at least two no-kill shelters in town: Animal Defense League and San Antonio Humane Society. If you are able to get them to accept an animal, they will keep it until it is placed in a home. I've been volunteering at ADL for over two years and some of the dogs have been there for several months. There is one dog who has been there since I started volunteering.

While not as bad as The Valley, San Antonio has its share of stray pets problems. And while the southside is a common dumping ground, not all the pets dumped originate on the south side.

If you are concerned about the problem in your area, you might get together with other pet lovers in your area and consider setting up a project similar to the Cannoli Fund The Cannoli Fund for Dogs and Cats – El Fondo Cannoli Para Gatos y Perros- King William and Lavaca – San Antonio, Texas » the mission. Along with some local pet-related business owners who help with capturing, fostering and placing in homes, they have made a huge impact upon the stray problem in our area. It was just started by a few local residents, it's something anyone in any neighborhood can do. If you're worried about strays, this is one step in the right direction.

It is true - I just took in a stray on Tuesday - which is #5 in two months. Of the 5 only 1 was microchipped and reunited with his owner the next day. I was lucky that I was able to place the other 3 with rescue groups. The current one had an embedded collar - poor thing

Two of my four were also neighborhood strays.

I must say though it is not surprising as these same people barely care for their children, much less an animal. Sometimes I think humans are really the savage animals.
