Huh?

It shouldn't happen to anyone. No one should get fired for speaking a native language at work. Why are you trying turning this into something it isn't?

There is no need to turn this situation into something to do with "Spanish".

This guy may or may not have gotten fired for speaking Chinese at work (sounds incredibly unlikely but who knows) but done posters here trying to turn this into sorting etching it isn't by bringing up the Spanish lamguage to try and help shsle a illogical argument are full of fail.

I absolutely do believe there would be more sympathy for someone speaking Spanish, and that a Hispanic would have a much better shot at success in court over it, at least in San Antonio, TX.

And this is deemed inappropriate at work because some people who only speak English become self-conscious about what's being said. They'd never know if they were the subject of the Chinese- or Spanish-speaking coworkers. I won't comment on whether it's right or wrong. It just seemed that some of you needed an explanation.

Hey, he was told not to speak Chinese at work; he felt he could disobey his supervisor and he got canned. Ain't no argument about it, based on Texas labor laws he can be dismissed without cause and he was.

Hopefully he'll learn something from this experience and be a bit smarter next time around...

what does that even have to do with anything? Is this Chinese speaker not getting sympathy? Did he lose his lawsuit? Was he given an unfair trail because it was Chinese?

You speak in certainties. As of there is something to compare. This just came out today.

In what country is it ok to fire someone for speaking Chinese? Not america. Please don't act like that was any sort of grounds for insubordination. He's gonna win his lawsuit, that I can guarantee.

No one is saying that he doesn't have the right to speak Chinese, only that it's not appropriate at work "when other staff members are around". I imagine he didn't work alone in the large research institute, so continually choosing to speak in a language that not everyone can understand, despite obviously knowing English, seems like a big no-no. Even in less formal situations people know not to speak Spanish in front of people who speak only English so as not to make them feel excluded.

This definitely doesn't seem like a discrimination issue to me, but who knows?

What do you mean I speak in certainties? I began the sentence with "I believe"! And obviously, I'm implying that if this man doesn't get some satisfaction in court, I think it's because he's Chinese and not Hispanic (in Texas).
