Do they make tamales all day at Rubens? I have only gone during the holidays and they only make them early. The rest of the year can I walk in at say noon and get a couple dozen?

I'd go to Tellez instead.. They make theirs every day and they won the best tamales in SA award a couple months ago. Some tamales from there are one of the last things I'm buying before I leave next week. They'll probably be some of the only things I miss too...

I don't know RD.... I never heard of Tellez.. But, I hadn't had Reuben's for a few years and got some again last year. I'd forgotten just how good they were.

Last time I recall the Stations doing a contest years ago. Rudy's on S. Flores won for tamales...they suck. The BBQ place across from Reuben's won for BBQ. Everyone was touting Delicioso's (sp) the last few years. I tried them they were crap...even had raw masa in them. Reuben's has been around a long time. Too bad Goas went out of business many years ago.

Tellez is on General McMullen just south of 90. The winner for this year's best ribs was the Rusty Bucket, which is just down the street from Tellez on Cupples. Sucked that I had been working around that good of food and didn't realize it until a couple months ago and then I left the job..

here's the article on the Rusty Bucket and they also have one for Tellez: The Rusty Bucket has the best ribs in San Antonio|WOAI: San Antonio News

BTW, get the Smacked Down potato if you try the Rusty Bucket. Even my super picky stomach loved it and it seems to hate almost everything lately.

I get my tamales from Tellez, love them! I won't go anywhere else.. they now have a location in Leon Valley at Seneca and Bandera Rd. and in Helotes... I don't have to travel so far now to get my tamale fix.

Well. guess we'll have to try them next time. I try to avoid Gen. Mac and Hwy 90. Had rear wheel.. axle and all come off a year old Ford truck in the early 70's. I was exiting onto Gen McMullen off 90 coming from SWRI. The wheel and axle flew across at least 4 lanes and landed in a field. Took 1/2 an hour to find it. Fortunately it missed everyone as it was light traffic. OK back to tamales.. Wish I had some right now.. Tellez is about the same distance from us as Reuben's!

You work at SWRI? I didn't know that. I was considering a job there right before this Germany thing came up. You have to at least try them. Last time I brought some home, I had one and they all disappeared the next day and that was with only two other tamale lovers in the house and one was a three year old.. They're really simple and just taste damn good. Might as well hit up the Rusty Bucket while you're there too. Eat that fresh and get the tamales to go. Don't forget to get some of those cinnamon and sugar things too. I can't remember the name, sopapillas or something like that. They're crack pretty much.. and that's from someone that's not even supposed to be able to eat sugar.
And for the inquiring minds/mods, I only went to the Cupples one. I don't know how the 209 one is, but it should be outstanding if they follow the same recipes and techniques. Trust me, places like Rudy's have nothing on this one..
