I just went to Brackenridge Park today to look at some of the pavilions that can be rented, and was really excited to find Koehler Pavilion (although Voske Pavilion was more impressive, I read that alcohol is prohibited there). Has anyone had any experience with wedding receptions at Brackenridge park? How is the park at night--are there normally many shady looking people hanging around?

And for that matter, does anyone know of any more hidden gems of San Antonio I should check out?

The San Antonio Firefighters Banquet Hall is inexpensive, and you bring everything. They provide tables, stage, kitchen, and set-up. I believe in 2006 it was $1000, with $500, the deposit, refunded after the event. That was with someone from the fire department renting on your behalf. Without someone renting on your behalf the price only went up a little bit.

This isnt in San Antonio, but I got married in Port Aransas at Sea Gull Condominiums. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT. Get married in the off season to save some money on the condo and you can have the service right on the beach or on their boardwalk which is what we did. It was not expensive. The room we got was a 3br condo on the 11th floor and it cost us a whole $135 a night. It was top notch housing (these condos are 3/4 of a million easy). They didnt charge us for the use of the banquet room. Depending on how big of a wedding you are going to have, this may not be suitable for you. We had a pretty small one. Good luck.

Try Cadillac Bar...they have two pretty good size rooms that are away from the bar area. They actually have food too and is large enough to have a band and dance floor. Relatively inexpensive too...manager is a nice guy as well.

I was recently a bridesmaid at Twelve Oaks Bed & Breakfast in Bulverde, which is a gorgeous outdoor wedding venue near San Antonio ~ on the northside 5 minutes from loop 1604

Anyway the bride is one of my best friends and they don't have a lot of money but we had looked at several venues and this one was by far the best value. A lovely inexpensive wedding outdoors in the texas hill country under a big gazebo.

The venue wedding package included a wedding minister, music, food and tables /chairs already set up and decoreated. Also the wedding photographer was provided too and all for about ~$3,000 which is REALLY inexpensive for Texas weddings in Hill Country. The closest comparable place was about $1000 more and it didn't have a pavilion or anything. Just a big lot. Actually we had saved a lot of money with their wedding package but if you are on a super tight budget they rent the place out for $1500 no frills. http://www.hillcountryvenue.com

Talking SA Weddings.........

About one month ago, I attended a wedding on a Friday night, it was small and beautiful at La Orilla Del Rio Ballroom downtown, San Antonio. They are featured on SA Weddings magazine and on their website. http://www.sanantonioweddings.com/virtual_tour.asp?ai=1610&ctr=0
La Orilla Del Rio Ballroom also has their own website, and I believe the rates are posted on there. http://www.sanantonio.gov/riverwalkballroom/index.html My friend said she paid about $1,200 for the evening. This did not include catering. However, it is a very elegant place with a nice balcony and gorgeous views of the downtown riverwalk. The place even provides parking for the event.
