I would contend that the vast majority of DV tag holders are not even aware that Texas law allows them to park in handicap spots. It is the most common question we get when we are on patrol, and even I wasn't sure until I went through training.

It's pretty rare to see vehicles in HC spots with just DV tags (no HC placard or tag), despite it being legal to do so.

And even though I am legally able to park in a HC spot, I never have and don't plan to until such time as I physically require it.

Sasha's neighbor was exaggerating, and I can assure you that the requirements for a DV tag are significantly more stringent than getting a handicapped placard/license plate in the state of Texas!

I am not sure where you get "significantly"...cause I would disagree. If you are 50% disabled and it's service connected, you can get one. So...guess what? If I have sleep apnea and I am rated @ 60%, then I get the tag. How about GERD? If it's bad enough...60%. DV Tag.

I think Texas law in respect to DV tags is horrendous. An MD should make an actual determination that you are in fact disabled...at lease when it comes to parking. I have many, many stories about this but if I was indeed disabled, I would do everything in my power to NEVER have to find parking in San Antonio!

You must be involved with the SAPD "PST". When I was involved with the volunteers, I was going to join the group, but on my first "ride along" the guy driving (about 65 years old) crashed the car. It was clearly his fault but refused to admit it. At that point, I decided the PST wasn't a good fit for me.

It's a great service and I appreciate the free parking even though you have to show your registration. The same people complaining give up more information for facebook or paying bills online. It's a small price to pay for a free service. Thank you SAT.
