I have an old Kenwood receiver from the '70's that worked great - then suddenly it wouldn't power up. I think these old receivers have fuses, or it could just be a short.

Is there anyone in San Antonio capable of working on vintage electronics? I know there is one commercial outfit (from searching the web) - but they seem to have very rotten reviews. Anybody know of someone working on their own who might like to take a look at it? I'd really like to get this thing going again - cosmetically, it's in good shape, and it used to work great until - it wouldn't turn on anymore.

I'd go looking for some 'vintage electronics' forum. If you can find one that is fairly active they can probably point you in the right direction, although it probably won't be local. They may even be able to help you get it going again yourself.

If you decide to open it up, be very careful, even unplugged sometimes they can give you quite the shock.

What is the model number? Perhaps I can help you out.

I owned Alpha Electronics Repair up until we closed it in 2003. We specialized in stereo repair and had been a Kenwood warranty center since he 70's. I still have all the service manuals and whatever parts were leftover from stock.

It's a Kenwood KR-710 - I understand they came out with that model in '78.

Well, apparently somewhere along the way, I chucked out all the Kenwood service manuals. But even when I had the manual I would hardly ever pull it out because I just didn't need it most times.

I'd be happy to look at it for you and see if it's anything worth repairing. Send me a PM and let me know whereabouts you're located. I'm on the northwest side of town.

Did Sound Idea used to be on Fredericksburg Road? Was it the little shop with one employer/owner, I think he may have been german or european? I have trying to find the shop to see he still had any reel to reel's for sale...he used to sell and repaired used equipment. Anyone know who i mean?

Yes, that's the same The Sound Idea. I believe the original owner's name was Armin but he died quite a few years ago. Last I knew his son was running the shop at their new location.
