Yeah. Sounds to me like you got "lucky". Those things can be tempermental - and honestly, they can go years and years w/o a problem, then suddenly fail. Others NEVER fail - it's just the luck of the draw. Good news is that it shouldn't be an expensive fix.

The TPRV is a significant safety device on the water heater that is set for a maximum of 210 Degrees or 150 PSI before it opens. Either the valve was doing its job and another problem exists or it has failed as they will do. The TPRV should be inspected and tested/exercised at least once a year to look for the signs of a failure. The inspection and test is so easy anyone can do it and most, if not all, water heater manufacturers put the inspection and test procedure in their water heater manuals.
