We're having dinner with some friends in a couple weeks and its our turn to choose the restaurant. My husband wants to "try somewhere new." (as in, new to us, not necessarily new to San Antonio).

We want somewhere nice and unique...a "hidden gem" of San Antonio. We don't want sushi since we're having it next week for my husband's birthday. We live in the Castle Hills area and our friends live in Alamo Heights, so something convenient to everyone (i.e. - not Stone Oak, not far NE or NW side) would be best.

The last few times we've been to dinner with these friends we've gone to Le Frite, Piatti's and Bin 555...just to give you an idea of the type of restaurant we're looking for. We want somewhere where we can just sit and talk and it's not a problem. These are always 2-3 hour dinners. =)

Please post your recommendations! Thanks!

There is a new place that just opened in Alamo Heights within the past week or so that would fit you perfectly based on your other preferences - Merchants Grand Cafe. It is in the old Alamo Heights Hardware store near Bike World on Broadway. I went earlier in the week and it was excellent. Had Salmon which was excellent, entrees run $15-$25 and they have a very reasonable wine list.

Otherwise, Liberty Bar on Joesphine Street is Great. Ciao Lavanderia in Olmos Park is good and unique or Azcua on S. alamo is unique too.

Branch out!

Bistro Vatel is French, with some fusion thrown into the mix. They have a daily prefixe menu for 38 a piece, which includes app, entree, and dessert. You can sit at a nice cozy table with candle light and linens in your jeans, what you'd expect if you were at a Bistro in Europe. Not too fancy, in fact, their ffries are to die for. Same owner as La Frite and Ciao Lavanderia.

If you're in Castle Hills and you like places like Bin 555, why not try The Lodge? It's practically in your backyard and a wonderful experience.

Also, one observation on a couple comments posted previously. I've found Boardwalk Bistro to be pretty good food, but the decor has gotten pretty shabby over the years... mismatched furniture, linens, very odd pairings of art on the walls... maybe they're trying for a "Parisian eclectic" look, but it comes across as "early garage sale". Still, the food is quite good.
