Hey all,

So I'm getting ready to move from Michigan to San Antonio for my Masters degree. I'll be going to UTSA and I've been doing a lot of research online between this forum, yelp, and some other random areas. I'm still having a bit of trouble finding a decent apartment to rent though. I really like the medical center area (low crime, affordable rent, close to UTSA) but the more that I look, the less that I find in the way of apartments. It may just be me being finicky, but whenever I find a place that looks pretty cool it looks almost like there are some employees doing some heavy seeding on their reviews. (I just say this because there is such a HUGE polar switch between some STELLAR reviews and some HORRIBLE ones.)
Do any of you know of any good complexes in that area? I'd even take suggestions that would involve a similar distance, even if they're not in the medical center.

Thanks!

Avoid all of the complexes on Cinnamon Creek Drive. Nothing but old run down places. The one complex in specific Villages of Cinnamon Creek. ALL of the positive reviews are from employees.

Price range? Any reason you do not want to be closer to UTSA? Plenty of newer complexes near the Rim or vance jackson and UTSA Blvd.

My price range goes up to about nine hundred, but I'd like to keep it closer to eight. I basically just had the medical center as a starting point. Honestly, if you know of a very nice place that's even closer to UTSA, I'm all ears!

The area immediatly surrounding UTSA is very nice. Since you are in Grad school, and not undergrad, I would look into the areas on the otherside of 10 from UTSA. Search for apartments on Vance Jackson north of Huebner. The area south of Huebner is going to be more family oriented and, while close to a lot, aren't nearly as nice. I have researched apartments in several areas of the city but this isn't one of them (probably because I lived there most of my life and it's above my budget now).

There are also some nice areas in the Medical Center, such as the one complex that rynetwo mentioned. Do discuss section 8 qualifications with complexes in the Medical Center area. Several apartments do accept housing vouchers and are home to a large number of refugees which, while not bad in itself, does kind of affect the outward appearance of the complex. One such complex is Alamo Hillside. The complex recently changed its name from Nob Hill and is a bit iffy, even during the day (the only time I have been there).

Apartments for Rent San Antonio, TX | Villas at Medical Center
How much do the rents run here ? Have a friend that may need to look for a place soon.

Edit: Sorry, I clicked through and they have the rents listed. I'll tell him.

I used to rent my garage apartment out to medical students going to the UT medical school and almost all of them had nothing good to say about living in apartments in the medical center. I do not do this anymore now that I have a partner and it would just be awkward.

I know the medical school has a listing of people nearby that rent out a room in a house or have private garage apartments to rent out. Maybe UTSA has the same thing if you are willing to try that out.

It worked out well for me for the most part (had one dental student who was a complete slob and was glad to see him go) as they tend to be quiet and too busy all the time to cause trouble.

This is a map of apartments in SA. You can filter out anything outside of your price range and see how close the remaining options are to UTSA

Good luck
