Who remembers the heydays of the St. Mary's strip? You could say that was San Antonio's mini version of 6th St. in Austin. I remember Carlos O'Brian's (now Candlelight), La Playa, Joey's, Nona's Italian Restaurant with belly dancers, St. Patrick's Day bash. What were some of the other clubs names? What are you memories? I remember it was a great little area with some good clubs and nightlife. I remember the area turning into a ghost town after that young man was shot and killed. There was alot of controversy related to the noise/traffic/parking factor and disgruntled neighbors.

***************************
I lived two blox away during the heyday.

One night around 2:15 AM,
drunk totaled my car parked in the street.

Knocked it next door in front of the neighbor's house.

I only went down there on foot,
and only on Halloween night.

I am not sure about the "heyday" years. I would say the mid 80's. Lou Fox was city manager and the old spurs coach who wore the fancy suits used to go there on occasion. I believe the young man who was killed was from Alamo Hts. Sorry... not great with dates.

It still has clubs. I like the the Mix and Tycoon flats. I think Tycoons may be closed now. There is still some life there.

As a Trinity student, St. Mary's was like our backyard... everclear margaritas at Flats', everyone dying to get into Huey's because they were the only ones who really carded, Nona's, Playa Santa Maria... ahh good memories. St. Mary's was still pretty hot when I started at TU but by the time I graduated in 91, the gang activity and pissed-off neighbors had already had an effect on decreasing the popularity of the area.

I've worked with a few retail/service businesses located near the strip and they say that the St. Mary's business association wants to do something to revive the area without reverting to the weekly drunken hordes that used to be their trademark. Hmm... anyone got suggestions for how to revive the area (other than Candlelight and El Milagrito, I never go down there anymore).

Some trendy restaurants with bars. Like nonas used to be. Maybe a tapas place, a sushi place an italian place. The kids came for the bars.

with the gay strip club and the band venues Idk. Somebody do it. I bet the property values decreased for the surrounding home owners after the "noise" element left...

My mom talks about how that street used to be the hotspot back in the days. Was the one shooting the only thing that changed all that?

In my opinion things changed dramatically after the shooting... basically the place became a ghost town overnight so I think it was due to the shooting. Nobody felt safe going there after the shooting. There was also a fire at La Playa.
