hey guys, I will be moving to Texas in 1 weeks and i have a question about registering my out of state car. mainly with the 6.25 % tax and the new resident fee. i calculated and everything is going to be well over a grand. do they expect us to pay all of that at once when we register the vehicle. seems like an exxessive amount of money to register it. ive bought cars in illinois and have never paid more than like 200 to get it registered. Any help will be appreciated. thanks

Dont forget the green inspection form.

And yes the tax sucks, I paid $8k sales tax on my last car made me cry a little. Use to be ok with it when we had that federal deduction for sales tax . Thanks obama

If you've calculated the fee correctly, I would expect that would have to be paid in full to register the vehicle. I doubt there are any payment plans. Could be wrong.

Huh? State sales taxes are deductible, you still have a choice of sales tax or income tax.

IF you are military you can keep the car registered in your home state if that is an advantage to you. You must be registered to vote there, have it as your home of record, or own property there.

Of course, if you are from a state that will force you to continue to pay state tax while living out of state, suck it up once is much better than paying every year.

From what I understand, some states DO exempt you from state tax when stationed out of home of record, but a lot of them (CA being one) does not.

To the OP, the sales tax is only paid once. If you paid in Illinois, you will not pay in TX (actually I think there is a gap responsibility - if you paid 6% when you bought the vehicle in another state, you will be responsible for the .25% gap when registering in TX). But I think IL has some of the highest sales tax rates in the country so you probably won't owe anything.

Best thing - call the Bexar County Tax Assessor - (210) 335-2251. They will be able to give you the exact amount based on your situation.

Also keep in mind that you do not have to retitle the car in TX. Only pay the tax if you came from a state which didn't collect the tax on their end too.
