We had concert tickets and figured that there would be a cool vibe in Austin. Aside from Austin City Limits, Antone's, Mayfield Park to see the peacocks, and the art on Baylor Street, there wasn't any more vibe to keep us there. You're right about the homeless people -- it was very sad to see. San Antonio was AWESOME, though, so the sad feel of Austin quickly dissipated.

DawnMTL,

In February is a GREAT TIME to visit THE ALAMO & it's worth more than an (typical for tourists) "one hour stop". = Like an onion, an actual understanding of the complexity of the events of The Texas Revolution is like peeling back the layers of an onion.
(And YES The Alamo is in the middle of downtown AND it IS "that small".)

yours, tex

We LOVED The Alamo!!! We spent a lot of time there, actually, going through all the "rooms," looking at all the exhibits, reading all the plaques, walking the grounds, seeing the sculptures, and even the "structures" across the street (the street that didn't exist at the time of The Alamo). It was awe-inspiring and very educational. A truly amazing experience.

Well, crap, how did we not know about this place?! It was so close to our hotel and we must have driven and walked by it multiple times. Phooey! No, actually, not phooey -- it's a reason to come back!

So you're saying that we should arrive in February and leave in early May. Got it!

Welllllll.......as long as you don't mind a HUGE party that's generally well-behaved (and VERY well attended)!!

Fiesta is definitely worth visiting - but I'd say the odds of getting a room for that time slot would be slim unless you book now - and be prepared for some pretty hefty "upcharges" during that time.

Ha! That sounds like loads of fun but I'm not ready to plan another trip. Maybe NEXT year's Fiesta!
