We currently live in an Austin suburb, but will be moving to New Braunfels this summer with a high school junior (2017-2018). What can you tell me about the neighborhoods and high school choices? We will look in the 400,000 - 500,000 dollar range, yet we're not the type to buy name brand clothing or new vehicles; we simply need a large house for family. Our daughter does very well in school, with an interest in engineering. She is in her second engineering class. I'm hoping she will go to a high school with a warm environment. Suggestions?

New Braunfels has two high schools. From my understanding New Braunfels high school is more in town and New Braunfels Canyon is more suburban and new. That's all hearsay from co-workers that grew up in New Braunfels though.

You also have Smithson Valley HS, which is more towards 281, west of New Braunfels. Our kids are all grown and gone, but my understanding from local friends is that any of the three are good schools.

Sounds like price is the primary concern on the new house, so look west of New Braunfels, off of Hwy 46. You'll find plenty of the higher-priced homes there!

If you want to live outside town, Canyon Lake High School is on the north side of the lake. Don't have any kids, but have heard good things about CLHS, too.

Default Thank you and Any Specific Neighborhood Comments

Thank you for your responses. The schools sound like they are good, which is a relief. Hopefully, she will be welcomed as a new kid in junior year. For the house, it isn't about the money, I was just giving a range of what we expect based on wanting a large home for our 5 kids and frequent family visitors, plus a little bit of land. This is just what I've guessed from what I've seen on Zillow. I would like a newer home simply because we've fixed so many and we both work so time is limited. I'll check west of 46 - if anyone knows of personalities of any of these neighborhoods, I appreciate your time and comments.

There's two sites I'd suggest - San Antonio Board of Realtors (link below), and Realtor.com - those are the two sites I've found to be most accurate. I've found Zillow to be a joke - but that's just me. Their "estimates" of the home value are almost laughable, both low AND high.

Listing Search Form - Search for Real Estate Properties | San Antonio Real Estate-SABOR-San Antonio Board Of Realtors®

Find Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Apartments & Houses for Rent - realtor.com®

You'll want to search Comal County on Realtor.com - both sites give you excellent "drill-down" abilities in terms of finding homes better fitting your desires. Most times they'll give you the schools available, as well - but VERIFY that with a GOOD local Realtor.

Also, I'd avoid anything in Guadalupe County unless they'll be attending a NB school. Again - no kids in school, but I hear horror stories about SOME of the Guadalupe County schools.

Also don't stress too much about culture shock. A lot of Austinites fear going south and toward San Antonio. It's not that different (coming from someone from San Antonio and now in Austin). You're literally moving 45 minutes south of where you are now.

Maybe not "fear" but worry.

Never picked up that vibe during my 9 years in Austin.
