Barbaro or Frank. Both are a short car ride from downtown. It's not Mexican, and no where in your post does it say it has to still be Mexican food.

Thanks to everyone so far! I appreciate the efforts.

Yes, when I say sit down referring to a server who comes to your table for an order and who brings your food. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be Mexican - that's just where we ended up due to the 24/7 component and was a place that had food that pretty much everyone could find something to eat.

Chaco's sounds interesting (I've found food in the non-gringo areas in Quito, Ecuador to give some perspective) but probably not where the group would go. I think it would need to be somewhere relatively "tourist safe".

Does anything on Riverwalk qualify? I'm sure locals get tired of Riverwalk (just like this former Minnesotan would rarely go to Mall of America even if I still lived there) but if it hits all the criteria most of us might at least consider Riverwalk.

I'd vote NO to Chacho's. It's a hot mess. Dirty. Loud. No bueno. Added, it's nowhere close to where you want to be.

Riverwalk food on the whole I'd avoid. $25 enchiladas is highway robbery. They should be illegal.

Not mexican, but Lu-Lu's is open 24 hrs.
Only problem is they may not have enough room for 25-30 people when you go.

If good Mexican food that also serves fabulous steaks is the goal, be near downtown, then you need to try Piedras Negras Del Noche. It's off of 35 North just north of Laredo St. It's authentic and it's open til 12 on Saturday.

Piedras Negras de Noche | San Antonio | Mexican | Restaurant
