Hey, I've noticed for the past 8 months these 4 ince diameter holes in my grass. They only go in an inch or two to the soil beneath the grass. No sign of a gopher or rat hole. I can't seem to figure out what's making them. It seems like a rodent, but I just cant figure out what they're for. Maybe they're from insects. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

I wold say someone's mark from their high heels if they were wearing high heels, but I don't think that's the right answer.

I watched a really big squirrel digging up my back yard a few days ago. I'd had the same holes in a flower bed, usually right at the root ball of a plant. After I watched the squirrel for a few mintues I walked out to see and sure enough, holes! My guess is the ground is so compacted that they have to dig and the ground doesn't 'bounce back'. FWIW, I also saw some of those big loud gackle bird things digging around...but they went deeper and didn't leave such a hole. I'm putting out some cayenne pepper after whatever rain we get tonight. That's supposed to keep rodents and the like from digging around.
But, on the up side...I don't have to aerate my yard!

I vote for squirrels too. We have a LOT of them and they have been busy lately. Seems they are digging up buried pecans and other treasures they stored from last fall.

My squirrel problem is: one huge oak tree and only one little ol' squirrel. That's a lotta nuts for one little ol' squirrel. His friends and relatives keep getting squished in the streets.
