Whether we're #27 or #7, it's embarrassing. Austin, Houston and Dallas all have full-time symphonies that have found funding, grants and private underwriting to make them function. This city can cough up mad money for Spurs tickets, but it's crickets when arts organizations need capital to keep them alive. Arte es vida.

It's yet another nail in the coffin of a regressive town that won't ever allow itself to become a world-class city.
Symphony Orchestras are struggling all over the country. Bigger city symphonies have filed for bankruptcy and many are barely holding on and some have shut down. Its not just a San Antonio problem. San Antonio's symphony was a full time orchestra as well as Houston and Dallas, Austin's is part time. San Antonio does support the Arts, the Tobin Center is one of the best performing Arts Centers in the world plus we have world class museums and overall art scene. It is sad that this happened, hopefully the symphony will be bought back to life.

I agree. San Antonio’s will celebrate with a parade the opening of a new Bucees, but sleep on anything with an “artsy” connotation….smh

Remember going to the symphony as a kid back in the 1960s. All kinds of school went there, both private and public. Unfortunately , I'm not Musk or Bezos to sponsor or keep it alive. And let's face it, this isn't New York or Boston which still have orchestras due to rich patrons and corperations. Some of the families in these cities have been supporters since the 1800s.

Will you allow some of those homeless from the Berkley camp set up shop in your backyard to represent some of that "progress" or are you NIMBY type like Pelosi in SF?
Funny enough the people of Alamo Heights were mostly bitching when the new development at Nacogdoches and Basse was introduced.

Are you talking about that huge new apartment complex with shopping on the first level?

Best in the world? Seriously? No. The Tobin had a couple of decent seasons and is now filling the venue with tribute bands and reality show celebrity crap. Same goes for The Majestic, Empire and Aztec. Their 'Broadway' series is mostly non-equity bus and truck tours that charge top dollar for subpar companies.

World-class museums? No. Not even close.

Nothing in the realm of Chicago, NYC, Los Angeles or Dallas. Not even in the same DNA strand as London or Paris. Locals arts organizations have taken a huge hit since COVID and many haven't come back. Community theatre is barely surviving.

The McNay, The Wittie, Majestic, Empire, Aztec and Tobin Center are definitely world class venues. The Tobin Center is rated as best performing arts center in Texas by pollstar and it has won global awards for its architecture. World Class is not a label limited to only global cities like Paris and London.

Yep. I think it is shopping, offices, and apartments/condos.

Personally I'm not a big fan of it either but I'm not a huge fan of development in general... So I don't think it is hypocritical.

So, what are those unique attributes you're talking about? Fast food people endlessly rave about? Mom&Pop Tex-Mex holes in the wall on every street and half dead strip malls? River Walk locals seldom visit more than twice? HEB ruling the grocery market? Oh, and the Spurs. The city pride!
It seems that's all the locals want, desire and support for intellectual entertainment.
I guess, people who cherish that don't travel much.

Despite our "numerous assets", San Antonio does lack some key features and faces challenges that impact the future growth and health of our community.

We could do better, but do we WANT that??
