Here's my expierence.I live in Adkins and my electric is F.E.L.P.S (co-op)out of Floresville. They purchase energy from CPS at specific rates and charge customers based on those rates on a monthly basis(listed as TPPA on billing). Our house is 2550 sq ft,2 story,2 hvac units(10 seer),with sm.inground pool, all built in 2002.We moved in this last March and our tppa rate was .005,April was .016,May was .024,and June was .040.My May tppa billing was 106.74 and that was tagged onto my 317.79 for 4400 kwh used.Yeah,I know way too much.So I changed our habits and checked my meter daily.Reduced June usage by over 25% but because of increases in costs to purchase from CPS my tppa billing was now 132.58 even after 25% reduction in use. They told me they have no control over this cost and I asked them how are we supposed to budget this at this rate.

Budget for a huge bill each month. Then, if it turns out to be smaller, you have some extra cash.

Excellent suggestion. We planned for high water and CPS bills this summer. So far, actuals have been less than budgeted. But in the end that doesn't make writing the check any easier. I'll be glad when the hot weather is gone for the year. We have about six more weeks of high temps. If our pocket books can stand it a little longer then things will improve.

or just go with the budget plan (average of 12 months) and it only adjusts at the end. That way the higher months will be spread across 12, so an extra 120-240 will only equal 10-20 over the next year.

I hate giving anyone an interest free loan, which is exactly what you do when you average your high three bills over the rest of the year. Yes - it makes it easier - but you then spend more money than necessary during the other nine months of the year. I look forward to the fall and spring when my bill is very very small.

Same logic goes behind getting a big tax return. I always try to get back as little as possible and instead get more in my check every month.

Same for me. I don't pay anyone interest...and I don't loan for free either.

Just got a shocker of $359 for CPS...now, we were cranking the upstairs air (which usually is at 80 during the day) because I was painting upstairs. Downstairs runs most of the day at 75, as we are home. During the school year, it will set back to 80 from 7am-4pm, then down to 75 til about 10:30, then 78 at night.

However, we just found out that we have leaks in the evaporative coils on both units!! (getting a second opinion as we speak). That's a 3.5K fix, bleah!!
