Here's a rendering of the proposed new trauma tower at University Hospital. Medical Drive is in the foreground; UTHSCSA is to the left; the existing hospital is to the rear.

Any ideas on construction costs?

Also, any clue on when/if this will begin construction?

Total costs would be around $1B. It sounds like they want to get things rolling ASAP and are going straight to the University Health Systems board for Certificates of Obligation instead of waiting until November to put something on the ballot. This means higher taxes, but also faster implementation of the plan and lower construction costs.

Here's the E-N article that ran Jun. 26 (although I think you have to register to read it)

I guess the medical center is positioning itself so that they can retain their status with the new hospitals and medical facilities going up in Stone Oak. San Antonio really does have some incredible medical complexes being built now. With the old hospitals down town, the revised medical center off IH10 and the new medical center in Stone Oak (not to mention the military presence with Wilford Hall and BAMC) San Antonio is turning into quite the medical town. Glad to see all the investment.

Well they did a story in the news on it the other day, and well the reason for the expansion is because of the overcrowding at University. The other new hospitals in around town, stone oak, etc., will help to bring closer medical care to different parts of the city, BUT University is still the only Civilian Level I Trauma Center for San Antonio and South Texas, hence the new Trauma Tower. We are lucky though because we do at the moment have two other (military) Level I Trauma centers in BAMC an Wilford Hall.

BTW there is plans for a downtown expansion which looks rather impressive !!!!

Good news. Well designed and accessible medical facilities are necessary for future San Antonio growth.

Don't forget about the Westover Hills Medical Center near Sea World (Off 151). Santa Rosa is nearing completion and Baptist has finished a medical office building. Both Baptist and Methodist own land in the area and are planning facilities as well as additional medical office buildings.

Also, a research hospital should begin construction in Brooks City-Base soon, with plans for numerous biomedical and bioscience related facilities/companies.

Both CSR and Methodist are planning hospitals in Boerne. Methodist has already opened a standalone ER.
