Hi, just wondering if there are any bike trails near Potranco/1604? Also if there are any that would be good for a 9 yr old as well. Thanks ahead of time, in my searching on here the closest I found was Schnabel Park.

The closest one I know would be Government Canyon on 471 (Culebra), west of Loop 1604. Best to buy a season pass (I believe around $60), or it will cost $24 to get in.

Damn $24 is pretty high to go ride a bike for a day lol, I found that one too, but was hoping for something closer.

Check the Tx State Park website. I don't think $24 is quite right, but I've had a pass for a while, so maybe they've increased prices. It used to be $6 per car and another $2-3 per adult.
They've got miles of trails, both moderate and difficult.
As for the distance, Govt Canyon is only about 10 minutes from Potranco/1604. Not sure about Schnabel...

Oh, it is quite right. I paid $24 for one car with 4 people. That is why I suggested the season pass...much better deal. Anyway, I don't know of anywhere on Potranco you can ride off road, except the small strip of land to the west of West Loop 1604S going south from Potranco to the bridge, but mostly you see motorcycles and ATV's.

Alright thanks for the info, I guess I'll go check out both places and see.

Edit: If anyone else is wondering, I checked, and admission to government canyon is $6 per person. Kids 12 and under are free. Pass is $60 and includes you and anyone in your vehicle with you.

The Front Country at Govt Canyon is perfect for a trail ride with younger kids. There are a few spots where they may need to walk their bike (you as well); but for the most part it is fun without being too challenging.

Note that helmets are required, although you will probably see folks not wearing them. I highly advise them, and if you make your kid wear one, you should as well. It only makes sense, and it sets the good example.

Lastly, don't venture out into the Back Country. The trails are more severe and you are only inviting trouble with a younger child. I used to see people out there on bikes that weren't up to the challenge, it is not a good scenario.

You might also want to try OP Schnabel at Bandera and Braun. It has some easy trails as well, but stay away from the lower area that goes down to the creek. Again, it is more difficult and not suited for younger riders.

And I would also advocate a Texas Parks season pass. It will not only get you into Govt Canyon (plus all your friends in the same car), it is also good for the numerous other state parks such as Hill Country. Well worth it, especially when you consider it is only $5/month. I get a free one as a DV; but it is only for me and I still buy one for the family.

Cheers! M2
