There are numerous private ambulance companies around the city such as AMR, Americana, Acadian, etc.

SAFD is the city's EMS, however, you would be assigned to the firefighting division upon being hired and serve as a first responder as part of a fire company. After two years of service you have the opportunity to promote to EMS where you will be required to work as an EMT-P. I know some medics have no interest in the firefighting side of things, so I figured I'd let you know. Also, the hiring process can be competitive (3 to 4 thousand applicants) and lengthy (approx. a year). If you are looking for immediate employment upon your move, this may not be your best bet.

There are several other fire/ems departments in the smaller cities in and around SA such as Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, Balcones Heights, Olmos Park, Castle Hills, Hollywood Park, Converse, Schertz, Live Oak, and Leon Valley. The Toyota Plant even has its own fd/ems. You could check with these places to inquire about their operations and hiring timelines.

SAFD seems like a real crap deal. I wouldnt mind being a straight firefighter but im sure its very competitive and will take to long. thanks for the info i'll try the private companies

It may not be the best alternative for your current situation, but in no way is SAFD a "crap deal." Good luck in your move.

AMR (American Medical Response) is the EMS provider for Bexar County, the area which is not served by city fire departments. They seem to stay busy and appear to be quite capable. They generally have the same area of responsibility as the Sheriff's office. Also Americana and Gemini Ambulance companies are contractors with University health system and as such make regular calls for the hospital (like the jail). They also stay busy. I mention how busy they are since the private ambulance companies are for profit and being busy with govt contracts is important in keeping you employed. Here is a link to a list of private ambulance companies most of which i never heard of but should be looked at Ambulance Services (Results 1 - 22 of 49)*~*Ambulance Services San Antonio TX*~*Simple Search ~ SuperPages.com: Yellow Pages. Good luck.
