In front of that church before HemisFair.

It was a run down area with old buildings & parking lots.
Further down were the Victoria Courts.
I lived there for a spell.

Nice aerial shot. Too bad one does not exist of the same view, pre-Hemisfair. SA had much more character when it had
a vibrant downtown, pre-mall(s)!

I've flown in a Navajo Chieftain and it was pretty noisy. So was the King Air.

Does it still exist? This place looks like it's been there a while. Daniels Rd. and E. Houston.

Oops.. didn't notice DF posted same link.

Here's a link to some more interesting SA info.

I just found out that the Hemisfair Bunuelos factory has closed. I used to buy them at the Delicious Tamales on Marbach. Gone but not forgotten and hope they reopen some day

We buried the Chief last Saturday, not to far from Eastwood at Meadownlawn cemetery on St. Hedwig Rd.

Someone had also mentioned the club at Daniel Rd and FM 1346 (not Chilly Willie's or Mustang Club)

That would have been the Club YMPC. The Young Men's Progressive Club.

I served in the Gardendale VFD which covered this location from 1986-1992

The one and only time I set foot in that premises was when there was a community meeting about getting a CDBG grant for a Community Center/Fire Station. This would have been in the late 80's.

The inside of the club was like a time warp. There where tons of framed photos of generations of blacks who had served as club officers, actors/actresses, singers, bands and performers who had been there.

Looking at google maps, the building appears abandoned, largely unrecognizable, dilapidated and surrounded by overgrown trees and vegetation. The once paved parking lot is overgrown with weeds. I presume the members died off and the long tradition of pride that was obvious back then no longer demanded the club's persistence.

Parenthetically, the Gardendale Area community center, located around the corner on Keifer Rd. is doing well.

I've been in Chilly Willies. I attended a wedding at the Martinez "Social Club" back in 2006.
