Due to the "Economy" I'm careful not to offend some people, I am forced to become a scavenger for food and other items I would have otherwise turned my nose at a few years ago when I worked in a nice job and made good money.

I would like to know if any other San Antonians have found some good spots for freegan produce and other food items and what days and times are best to be on the lookout.

The food pantrys do help but they do not have the option for fruits and veggies.

Thanks

There is a nice community garden in Southtown on South Presa Street. If you're willing to do a little work you can take home your share of produce. They are usually working on Saturday mornings.

If your family qualifies for WIC, there are some WIC produce markets on certain days.

I am barely making it so I cannot travel to work on a garden out of my neighborhood on a often basis so I would feel guilty taking an produce from that area. It's a shame I am not able to grow one where I live. I save seeds in hope one day when I can afford a place I could grow my own garden. Where I live there is not enough sunlight and room to do so. I may come up with an idea. THanks for the hints

On Tuesdays there is church off Walzem inside 35 that offers some food assistance. I will try and make it out there ina few days.

Actually, it's on the bus line.

Volunteering once a month for two hours would probably provide two weeks worth of fresh organic produce!

If you had just gone down there this morning, they probably would have sent you home with salad stuff for the week.

I do some vocational counseling, let me know if I can help you with your resume or job search.

And don't be too proud to apply for food stamps; it beats the hell out of starving!

Angel Food Pantry doesn't have any income requirements. Try that out too.

Try the local chapter of Food Not Bombs!

San Antonio Food Not Bombs | MySpace

When I was a regular with the Chicago group, we had all sorts of local hook-ups, mainly through Whole Foods. Amazing produce and bakery that was being thrown away for the most idiotic reasons. Ahhh . . . hanging out in a big kitchen, shooting the ****, and then heading to Grant Park to eat and meet all sorts of interesting folks while sharing free (vegan) food--that was the life! There was a Chinese homeless guy who somehow hit rock bottom (and could barely speak English) but would show his appreciation by giving us these amazing massages that he learned back home.

Not familiar with the local folks, but from my experience they're almost always nice and resourceful people.

I also read that bagel shops and Panera Bread may have some freebies but I haven;t checked into it as I am trying ot stay away from bread but it would be a delicious treat occassionally.
